Two recipes are food items: Clam Cocktail and the Oyster Cocktail. Three of them are drinks that are technically not cocktails: Chocolate Cocktail (a flip), Coffee Cocktail (flip), and the Soda Cocktail (a soft-drink). The other forty-five recipes are true cocktails. "No cobblers, Collinses, coolers, fixes, fizzes, highballs, juleps, punches or sours in it. The majority of today’s so-called ‘craft cocktails’ (most of them actually sours or other short punches) would not have passed muster to get into the Gorham Cocktail Book." First Edition despite copyright date of 1894. Original dark cloth, gilt print at front cover: Mixed Drinks, 7 3/4 by 5 1/4 inches, 168 numbered pages plus ads. From the introduction: "I have been in this line of business many years, an active and observant worker, commencing my career with Messrs. Chapin & Gore. Amid the ebb and flow of life in the palace of conviviality, between drinks, as it were,I have taken a great many notes mentally, and I now commit them to paper to be launched out upon the sea of literature, a craft bearing the secrets of the saloon as revealed in book form, comprising the art of "tending bar," the mystery of mixing drinks, the etiquette of the saloon, the conduct of bar clerks and proprietors, the literature of beverages, and many tabulated statements and scraps of information never before published, but very useful to the man behind the counter. I feel confident that I have produced a standard work that comprehends the entire subject. It is not a mere recipe book of mixtures more or less well known, but it contains everything valuable "up to date." I commend it not only to the trade, but to others interested in the subject, and with the belief that there are few who will not find something of value in its pages. Two copies found on WorldCat. Interesting to note an article published in an Indianapolis journal from 1895: Herbert W. Green, proprietor of the Denison House bar, is experiencing, for the first time, some of the woes of the successful author. A few months ago Mr. Green became known to the literary world through the medium of a volume entitled, "Mixed Drinks". The author was fortunate in disposing of five hundred copies of the book immediately after its publication to Mayer Bros., of Cincinnati. Yesterday, Mr. Green, with Frank H. Smith, his publisher, brought suit in the Superior Court to recover the purchase price of the installment sent to Mayer Bros. as they never paid. This copy is not one of those five hundred, which has 'Compliments of / Mayer Bros. & Co. / Cincinnati' stamped at front cover. Cocktails include Brandy Crusta, Phoenix Cocktail, Remsen Cooler, Sam Ward, Sea Foam, Beef Tea, Banana, Blue Blazer, Velvet, Gin Puff, etc. Contemporary ownership inscription at front endpaper reading: Chicago Ill 6:25:1900 / Hal W Hauk / c/o Lancaster Hotel Bar / 21st Wabash Ave. Possibly once mixing guide for the bartender at the Lancaster. I can find no reference. Nearly Very Good, some expected signs of use, boards showing at cover corners, spine end cloth nicked and rubbed, inner hinges with mild signs of cracking. Item #34476

Early Printing, no other copyright dates, no printing statements (but first published in 1943). Small octavo, red cloth stamped in silver, 128 pages. An important cocktail book that went through many reprints. Introduction states: "The professional barman has many obligations to the public. Courtesy, cleanliness, restrictions on smoking, drinking, etc. these you all know about. One obligation, however, of equal importance, many of you tend to forget: that a drink should be the same all over the country. Clearly what is needed is some standard for drink-mixing, some way to prepare drinks in similar fashion from state to state and region to region." Book based on the private notes of Oscar Haimo, Maitre de Bar - Hotel Pierre and President of the International Bar Manager's Association. Very Good, attractive copy. Item #37650
