First Edition. "A thoughtful novel about present-day New York. Presenting a new and startling view of the bank scandals, racketeers, gangsters and politicians, written by an author who knows". A contemporary reviewer wrote: "This writer studies the turbulence of the boom period and the chaotic turmoil of the depression by following the fortunes of the three children of a wealthy New York merchant. They are two brothers and a sister, and when the merchant dies an aging lawyer is left to look after them; and it is largely through his eyes that the action is seen. It makes a queer picture. Most of the recent municipal scandals in New York are dragged in, thinly disguised. Racketeers, crooked politicians, unscrupulous financiers. Reading, you get an impression of a society grown utterly corrupt, utterly rotten, ready to disintegrate at the first serious shock." Very Good, top cover corners worn, in Very Good dustjacket, spine darkened, chipping to top spine end, small chips at lower spine end and flap corners. Item #24046
