1. The Storm Blows Over [SIGNED LETTER TO FRITZ LANG]. New York: Covici Friede Publishers, (1934).
First Edition. Fagg dustjacket art. Novel of "Varvara Philipovna, a very lovely lady in whom the mysticism of Russia and the inscrutability of the Orient were mixed with a disturbing element of western recklessness. Her loveliness had the devastating effect of a tropical storm on the other passengers aboard the S. S. Nordland, bound west from Chefoo and Shanghai. She tried to seduce the fourth officer; she robbed Her Breide, the chief officer, of his life's savings; she mortally insulted three Chinese students, drove an old maid almost to suicide and did her best to break up Sheridan's engagement to Nell." This copy with four sheet letter signed by co-author Lowell Brentano to Fritz Lang (Mr. Lang). In part the letter reads: "At the suggestion of Miss Antoinette Spitzer of Mr. Horne's office... is the story of a group of people who make a trip around the world in a freighter. One of the passengers is a lovely, inscrutable woman who influences and alters the life of everyone on board. This role could be played by any star possessing exotic glamour, such as Marlene Dietrich has, As a matter of fact, miss Dietrich was interested in this book a year ago. I sent her a copy... One reason I hope you will like it is that I feel it is the type of story that would benefit by your direction. You lend an air of breathless excitement, of terrifying suspense and mystery to all the pictures you direct... Among my plays is 'The Spider', my pictures include 'I'm No Angel', which Mae West did several years ago..." Lowell goes on to say he's willing to make changes to the story and would like to meet Lang. A great association and although Lang left no identifiable marks to the book, pretty inspiring to hold the same book that the great director did. Very Good, firmly bound despite webbing showing at inner hinges, cheap cloth worn down at top spine end, in Good only dustjacket, chipped at edges, spine with few quarter sized chips. Item #25383
