Three Elephant Folio sketchbooks. Fabulous collection of three massive sketchbooks used by children's illustrator Roger Vernam in composing his best known illustrated works of Native American and western American life published by Platt and Munk Co. of New York between the years of 1934-35. One sketchbook dated March 25 - November 1, 1935, with other two volumes appearing to be of similar vintage. Includes numerous original pencil, ink, crayon and paint rendered sketches for his toy books Cowboy Cutouts and Indian Cutouts, as well as his collection of Native American themed storybooks. Sketchbook One with 104 numbered pages, title page with headings for Indian Sketches, Animal Sketches, and School Work and including rough sketch illustrations with circus themes, baseball, dance and nude studies as well as the box-top design for My Indian Library. Approximately ten sheets removed. Sketchbook Two dedicated primarily with Cowboy Cutouts sketch work, approximately 41 sheets, including several translucent sketch sheets laid in, two experiments with color as well as two seperate four page manuscripts demarked First Draft and Final Draft, 1,300 words. Sketchbook Three dedicated primarily to Indian Cutouts, with approximately 44 sheets, with sketches for that work and including two five page manuscripts demarked 'Third' and 'Eighth' draft. All three sketchbooks in Good condition, 'newspaper stock' sheets prone to chipping at margins, tanning to paper stock, one pad lacking card-stock cover.
