First Edition. Original red cloth, white stamping, original illustrated dustjacket. Charles M. Relyea dustjacket art and illustrations (all four present). Extremely scarce first 'Dodd, Mead and Company' published title in the "Matty" series of baseball themed fiction by Mathewson intended for young adults. The first title, 'Won in the Ninth' was published by R. J. Bodmer Co. in 1910. Despite a list of ten titles to be included in the series only the first five (including 'Won in the Ninth') were actually published. The titles were planned in advance and listed altogether in the 1914 volume of Publisher's Weekly. Christy was a Baseball Hall of Fame pitcher, who played for the Giants and won 373 games in his career, a National League record. In the 1905 World Series, he pitched three shutouts, leading to a Giants victory. Mathewson never pitched on Sundays due to his Christian beliefs. Near Fine, some darkening to lower spine end, in Good dustjacket with two inch chip at lower spine end, chipping at top spine end and lower edges and flap corners, old sticker price abrasion at lower front panel, some wear to edges and short closed tears.
