First Edition. Translated and adapted by Louise Tausig. "Scrapped is the first really authoritative study of post-war Germany that we have had. Practically the entire novel is based on actual fact. The central figures are two young men, sons of families which had once been wealthy, respected, and prominent in imperial military circles. They find themselves destitute and attempt to find their places in a commercial and declassed society. One boy is finally dragged down to disgrace and murders by his own weakness and his fondness for a vulgar and deceitful woman. The other finds his place in the new order, and falls in love with a girl in the same straits, with equal courage. It is a valuable comment on conditions in the new German Republic, and a penetrating study of the problems that will always exist when there is an abrupt overthrow of existing social and economic conditions". Very uncommon title. Near Fine in a Good edge chipped dustjacket, some darkening to spine, few small internal chips at spine, split along rear spine edge.
