Item #27006 The Chase. Mollie PANTER-DOWNES.

The Chase. New York: G. P. Putnam's Sons, 1925.

First Edition. Published when the author was only 18 years old, The Chase tells of the life of young man who grows up among the struggling poor of London but who makes his fortune in New York. "He wandered into a street where stalls of fruit and cheap clothing and chinaware lined the kerb. Loud voiced costers bawled the merits of their goods. Chinamen and Cockneys, Jews and negroes, jostled each other impartially" In 1938 Panter-Downes began writing for the New Yorker, first a series of short stories, and from September 1939, a column entitled Letter from London, which she wrote until 1984. The collected columns were later published as Letters from England (1940) and London War Notes (1972). Very uncommon title to be found in dustjacket. Near Fine in Very Good but soiled dustjacket, some nicks and wear to edges, white panels were likely a pink color.
