Bates graduated from Wellesley College in 1880. After several years as a teacher, Bates returned to Wellesley College as an English instructor. She first published her most famous poem, "America the Beautiful," in 1893. After some revisions, her poem later became the lyrics to the patriotic ballad "America the Beautiful." Found in John Theakstone's bibliography of Victorian and Edwardian Women Travellers. An uncommon first edition to be found in attractive condition and with dustjacket.
