Vernacular Photograph Album 1911-1919: Hunter College; Catskills, Peach Lake, Coney Island, New York [SIGNED]. [New York]: [No Publisher], [1915].

Oblong contemporary photograph album 7 X 10 1/2 inches; Bound Black Leather over soft boards with black craft paper leaves; Initials: M.W.C. stamped in gold on cover. More than 300 black and white photos ranging in size from 2 x 3 inches to 3 1/2 x 5 1/2 inches. Some glossy prints but majority are matt finish; tipped in or held by contemporary photo corners. Very few notations, but many photos are dated in ink at lower corner. Some photos have been signed by subject, and a very few indicate the individual venue: Sullivan County, Rock View, Peach Lake (New York). Although never specifically indicated, one individual (a young woman) seems to stand out as the subject of the collection along with another individual Mary A. Powell who appears to be a dear friend. There are a great many photos of groups of young women who may be classmates at a women's college. One professional photo is of Elizabeth Vera Loeb (Stern) (and signed by her) who began teaching at Hunter College in 1915 and went on to an illustrious career with that institution, Ms. Loeb Stern established the first Hunter College Theater and the Hunter College Concert Bureau; and established the first credit courses in dramatics, including the master's program in speech and dramatics at Hunter College. Two additional photos of other young women, taken in the same setting as the photo of Loeb, may be photos of teachers in the early days of Hunter College. The majority of the photos appear to be family and friends in summer recreational activities: tennis, golf, canoeing, swimming and picnicking; as well as visits and excursions to popular vacation sites such as photos dated 1917 from Coney Island and Peach Lake 1919 (possibly the Bloomerside resort). Some photos show subjects in coats, hats and furs suggesting Fall weather. The photos are crisp and clear.
