Hailed as a masterpiece in French Literature by Havelock Ellis in his 32 page introduction to this work, Alain-Fournier here puts forth his story of rural French life on the eve of the First World War. The author served as a lieutenant during the war and was killed in battle. The novel would eventually be made into a French film, Le Grand Meaulnes, in 1967, directed by Jean-Gabriel Albicocco, and starring Brigitte Fossey and Jean Blaise. Great dustjacket art by Perkins.
