Artist Book, 18 original handwritten poems, 6 original water colors. Hand made artist book by W. Edwin Ver Becke: playwright, painter, poet. 30 individual sheets of heavy artist paper held inside a folio cover. The art and other contents are tipped in on each leaf of artist paper. The contents include original poems written out by hand, original one of a kind watercolor paintings, along with pages of notations and clippings from magazines and books, as well as copies of photos. The book was created by Ver Becke as a gift to an incarcerated inmate with whom he was carrying on a pen-pal like relationship. The two never met, and when Ver Becke sent the inmate, Dennis, this original book, the correctional facility return it to Ver Becke as illegal contraband. Ver Becke includes a handwritten note dated 1990 that outlines the inspiration behind the book as well as its provenance. A photo of "Dennis" along with his convict number is included in the book. The watercolors and the poetry are erotic with botanical themes. Ver Becke was a lecturer and promoter of the arts, and had art galleries and arts and crafts schools in New Orleans as well as Sausalito, California. He was primarily focused on theatre and was instrumental in the Little Theatre movement in the 40's and 50's in Sausalito.
