Photograph circa 1890. Sepia tone. 14” x 10 ”. Matted and in frame 24” x 20”. A title on the matting reads: “Saratoga Carlsbad Springs. Saratoga, N.Y.” The photograph shows a building with a roof-sign which reads: “Carlsbad” on the portion of sign which is visible in this photograph. A man in 19th century clothing stands alongside a one-horse-shay (a two-wheel horse drawn buggy common throughout the 1800s). This photograph is believed to be of the original site of what would become the Carlsbad Hotel. Saratoga Springs is famous for its naturally occurring sparkling water and has been known as a curative spa location since colonial times. By the Victorian age, Saratoga Springs had become a widely popular resort destination. The “Carlsbad Spring” was discovered 1886.
