5 1⁄2” x 9” octavo. Black Cloth over stiff boards. 162 total photographs. This bound book with blank leaves contains one photograph per page. The leaves have hand-cut slits to hold the photographs. All photos are notated in an excellent hand with a flourishing script written in pencil. Photographs range in size from 6 1⁄2” x 4 3⁄4” to 3 1⁄2” x 3 1⁄2”. Some are cut to unusual dimensions. Several photographs laid in, including three cyanotypes. Several scraps of newspaper clippings are also laid in, but are extremely brittle. At the front of the book, bound in, is a page taken from the 1897 biography of James Russell Lowell by Edward Everett Hale, James Russell Lowell and His Friends (Riverside Press, Cambridge). The photograph (with photo credit given) shows the childhood home of the Romantic poet James Russell Lowell: “ELMWOOD; From a photograph by Miss C. E. Peabody, Cambridge, Mass.” The significance of this “tear-sheet” and its place at the beginning of this bound album makes it reasonable to assume that the photographer Caroline E. Peabody of Cambridge, Massachusetts is the photographer and creator of this photo collection. Caroline Eustis Peabody (1848-1932) was the daughter of Andrew Preston Peabody, clergyman, Preacher to Harvard University and the Plummer professor of Christian morals from 1860 to 1881, and was professor emeritus from 1881 until his death in Boston, Massachusetts. Caroline E. Peabody was one of the original founding members of the storied “Old Cambridge Photographic Club” formed in 1892, and served as its secretary for over a decade. Miss C. E. Peabody was recognized for promoting the art and emerging technology of photography; her photographs won awards and were published in photographic periodicals of the day. Ms. Peabody was known for her landscapes, snow scenes, and architectural photographs.
This bound book of original photographs begins with a page titled: “New York May 1902.” This album is meticulously notated with dates and places, although the composer does not put the photographs in strict chronological order, returning to earlier months and locations throughout the album. The album spans May 1902 to October 1903 and includes scenes from: NYC: Grant’s Tomb, Hudson River, Riverside Drive, Brooklyn Bridge; Chicago: Chicago Beach Hotel, Row Boats on Lake Michigan, San Sousa Park, Lincoln Park (including a photograph of an Elephant standing in the shade under a man-made awning but not in a cage); and the Chicago Ferris Wheel (built for the World’s Columbian Exposition just ten years prior to this photograph); Newport; photo of “The Breakers,” also cows walking up Ocean Drive; As well as other sites such as: Niagara Falls and Syracuse, NY; Philadelphia and Valley Forge; Cambridge and Springfield Massachusetts; Detroit; Portland, Maine; New Hampshire; and Toronto, Canada.
