Dishes and Drinks; or, Philosophy in the Kitchen [Cocktail Punch Recipes]. London: Ward and Downey, 1887.

Revised and Enlarged Edition. Original orange cloth, 285 numbered pages plus ads, octavo. Scarce title concerning food preparation, with chapters on Meats, Poultry and Game, Vegetables, Condiments, Salads, Unfermented Beverages (Coffee, Tea and Chocolate), and Fermented Drinks. An interesting work which includes several recipes for mixed alcoholic drinks including Imperial Pine Apple Punch, Strawberry Punch, Arrack Punch Extract, Cardinal Extract, Rum or Arrack Grog, Iced Orange Toddy, Simple Gin Punch, Iced Gin Punch, Burnt Punch a la Francaise, Wine and Egg Punch, Gingered Egg Flip, Egg Rum Punch, Egg Grog, Cream and Egg Punch. The following is an extract from Strauss's introduction to the Fermented Drinks section of the Additions and Emendations chapter: "The same reviewer who would all but excommunicate my salads comes down with equal severity upon my cups grogs, toddies, and punches which he calls superb, yet fearful opining that none save millionaires with copper lined stomachs are likely to indulge in them. Really this is a little beyond the license of mere exaggeration, I am not in the habit exactly of consorting with millionaires rather very much the other way yet my cups, grogs, toddies and punches have never to my knowledge wrought the financial ruin of any moderate indulger in them." Very Good, modest darkening to covers.
