Item #39937 Last Nights of Paris. Philippe SOUPAULT, William Carlos WILLIAMS.

Last Nights of Paris. New York: Macaulay Company, 1929.

First Edition. A very illusive novel by this originator of Surrealism and automatic writing, translated by William Carlos Williams who also helped get the book published in America. 'The background is Paris of the quays, of little, cobbled, serpentine streets, filled with strange prowlers. We follow little Georgette from one cheap hotel to another, where she vends her intimacies without shame and with an honest measure of vivacity. At dawn her labor ends and she goes to a final rendezvous at the Champs Elysees where gather a strange company. Among them is the homicidal sailor, her brother Octave, whose mania is to destroy Paris in one terrible holocaust, and Volpe, the mysterious, who makes use of them all'. A Very Good copy despite a lending library stamp at rear pastedown and abrasions at front pastedown (and smaller abrasion at front endpaper), in Very Good attractive dustjacket.
