First Edition. Novel of a young woman's adoration for an artist for whom she models in the nude. Made into the 1932 British film directed by Maurice Elvey, starring Ann Todd and Sari Maritza. Herbert served during World War One with the Royal Naval Division of the Hawke Battalion from 1914 to 1917 and was wounded in France. He is credited with writing the first realistic war books to appear in England after the war. The Water Gipsies was written while Herbert lived on a boat on the Thames during which time he advocated for an end to the monopoly the logging and coal industry held over the waterway. Nice stylized dustjacket art. Near Fine in Very Good plus dustjacket, small spine end and flap corner chips, spine very lightly darkened.
