Super octavo (7 x 11”), with textured black cloth over boards. Contains 112 photos, each measuring 5x4”, of which 99 are black and white silver gelatin prints with 13 gelatin printing out paper (POP) prints. Contains 28 black white paper leaves with black paper frames, photographs are glued in with no writing from the previous owner. This album, dated from circa 1910, comprises photographs taken on travels around the Eastern United States during the early days of people owning and traveling with cameras. Several photos were taken in and around Niagara Falls, including two of the Honeymoon Bridge, which spanned the Niagara River from 1897 until its collapse in 1938. At the time it was built, this was the largest steel arch bridge in the world. Other photographs of note include the Carnegie Library of Pittsburgh, PA, and a Mail Pouch Tobacco Barn, a marketing stunt, where the Wheeling, WV based Bloch Brothers Tobacco Company had the name of their tobacco brand painted on barns across the country. A number of photos depict people in or around Central Park in New York City. Adjacent to these are several photos of boats and beach houses, although the order or logic of the assembled photographs are unclear. In addition to these travel photos, the album contains several portraits of various people and families. Many of these photos depict people sitting inside or on the porch of their homes, either alone or with their families. This includes two photos of African-American boys sitting on a porch and one of an African-American family. Adjacent to these are several photos of tobacco farm fields, and farm houses, although the location of these is unknown. Item #600953
