First Edition. Will Grefe frontispiece. Small octavo, original cloth, gilt and red lettering at covers in original printed and decorative dustjacket with heart shape cut out at mid front panel revealing red coloring of front cover cloth. Anthology of quotes and sentiments from the likes of Kipling, Abraham Lincoln, and Dickens and a surprising printing of Sakuma Tsutomu's famous last entry from his submarine journal. First published in English in 1910, this may very likely be the only printing to be found with a dustjacket. On April 15, 1910, Tsutomu's submarine suffered a malfunction resulting in the loss of the ship and crew. Two days later the submarine was recovered by Japanese authorities, and Tsutomu's journal was found, with a detailed analysis of what may have caused the accident, ending with an apology to Emperor Meiji for the loss of the submarine and 14 crew members before the ship's air ran out. The journal was posted in later press reports, and Sakuma became a posthumous national hero and an example for courage and steadfastness within the Imperial Japanese Navy. Near Fine in Very Good dustjacket, few shallow chips and closed tears. Item #25612

[First Edition] Small octavo, original gray cloth. Volume begins with a handwritten presentation page stating that the book was intended to be a gift to the widow of a gentleman named Oric Bates, a Harvard graduate who became a leading author and archaeologist of Egyptian history. But the collecting intrigue here is the signature of one of Bates' former classmates -- William Clarence Matthews. Born in Selma, Alabama, Matthews was educated at the famous Tuskeegee Institute before enrolling at Harvard, where he led the baseball team in batting average for the 1903, 1904 and 1905 seasons. In the summer of 1905, Matthews joined the Burlington (VT) team of the Northern League, making him the only African-American in any white professional league. Talks of him joining the Boston Beaneaters of the National League arose around this time but were quickly stifled, and it would be another four decades before Robinson would complete the task. Matthews would not live to see it, passing away at the age of fifty-one in 1928. Matthews' signature appears in 9/10 black fountain pen ink among the several dozen mourners. Extremely Rare. First Edition. Small octavo, original illustrated boards, 110 pages, illustrated. A very uncommon cocktail collection with only four library holdings found on WorldCat. Mcelhone was a defining figure in early 20th-century bartending, most famous for his role at Harry's New York Bar (in Paris), which he bought in 1923. He worked at Ciro's Club in Deauville and the Plaza Hotel New York. He is often credited with inventing many cocktails, including the Bloody Mary, Sidecar, the Monkey Gland, the White Lady, and an early form of the French 75. "Barflies and Cocktails conveys a whiskey-addled sense of zany humor that seems tied to the Roaring Twenties, when the book was first published. The running conceit of the book has to do with the fictional association of International Bar Flies, the rules of which include the admonition that, “Those seeing cerise cats with purple ears should keep it to themselves.” [Peter Meehan. New York Times, 2008] This copy inscribed at title page "Best wishes / Harry". I can not locate another McElhone signature to compare this inscription to, but we have no reason to believe its not authentic. A Good copy, lacks last leaf (111/112) which is an ad for The Boulevardier and photo illustration of Harry's Bar, cracked at front hinge (likely repairable), some lower page corners a bit dog-eared. Item #31231
First Edition. "The mission on which the Ambassadors of the Woman's Republic were sent to Europe was one of peace and good will. As your narrative is making its appearance in print, the most disastrous war of all history is ravaging Europe. Many of the noble structures of which you write are falling a prey to hostile troops and invading armies. With its pitiless sacrifice of men, woman's sphere will so enlarge and strengthen that when peace at last shall come, she will find herself in a new position — a position of equality and partnership with man". Uncommon title, especially so in dustjacket. Near Fine in Good, modestly edge chipped dustjacket. Item #27305
First Edition. World War One themed title. "The letters around which this book has been written grip one in a manner difficult to analyze. For here are the outpourings of a man's heart and the unfolding of a woman's soul." Near Fine in Very Good dustjacket, few short closed tears, chipping at spine ends and few flap corners. Item #26294
First Edition. Morgan Dennis dustjacket art. "A post-crash analysis of the human side of stock market investing. By explaining not only the basic principles of investing but the emotional side of the enterprise as well, the author hopes to prevent his readers from losing sleep over their investments." The author says, "One can imagine that with these conditions our investor, especially if he had been accustomed to having his money in good safe bonds, was lying awake nights wondering whatever induce him to go into common stocks. If his wife knew the details she probably was losing plenty of sleep and doing plenty of nagging, asking him a thousand times why he ever got into such a mess and what was going to become of their savings." But if the investor hung on there were better days ahead for two years later came the stock boom of 1905-6 when on January 1, 1906, his stocks showed a value of $16,930, almost 100 per cent more than he could have obtained for them in 1903. He could then remind friend wife of the supreme wisdom of man". A very uncommon stock market investment book to be found in original fragile illustrated dustjacket. Near Fine but for first several pages with small dampstain at top fore-edge corner, in Very Good dustjacket, chipped at spine ends, some closed tears and wear, some dampstaining to rear panel. Third Printing. Scarce, an important book which attacked the pseudo-learned and medical quacks in philosophy, mathematics, and other erudite fields. Author's title word, “Charlataneria,” similar to the English word “Charlatan,” comes from an Italian town of Cerreto known for its tramps and thieves of the middle ages who used trickery to get what the could from worthless money, whose tactic the author compares to the scholarly.
