This copy nicely inscribed and signed The Author, at front free endpaper, under the author's business card. Very scarce. Novel set during Reconstruction in the American South, sympathetic to the cause of recently freed African Americans and promoting their education. Themes of interracial romance, quadroons, poor whites and carpetbaggers. Use of dialect speech. "A most conclusive answer to Leopard's Spots [by Thomas Dixon] and the ignorant animus of the KKK". A very uncommon novel by this doctor who served as an assistant surgeon during the Civil War. Especially uncommon inscribed. Bookplate of Ambrose Swasey, an American mechanical engineer, inventor, entrepreneur, astronomer, and philanthropist. With Worcester R. Warner he co-founded the Warner & Swasey Company.
