First Edition under this title and with some revisions, or at least one revision which we found on the first page of text, (originally published under the title: A Voyage in the Sunbeam in 1878) Possibly the use of this new title was an effort by Conkey to pirate Brassey's work without paying royalties. Original red decorative cloth and original matching dustjacket. "Lady Brassey (1839-1887) was an English travel writer and philanthropist best known for her vivid accounts of ocean journeys undertaken with her family. Her husband was a Civil Lord of the Admiralty who made many ocean voyages by steam yacht to test this new technology. Annie Brassey's description of these travels led to her becoming a best-selling author. This volume, first published in 1878, contains her lively and detailed account of her family's circumnavigation in the Sunbeam, the first circumnavigation of the world by a steam yacht. Written in the form of a diary and based on letters sent to her father, this volume mixes exotic descriptions with lively accounts of domestic life on board, and was immensely popular. The book illustrates the attitudes of middle-class Victorians to exotic locations and cultures." Very scarce in dustjacket. The front flap reads: "This is a surprisingly good collection of stories by Lord Dunalley a new writer in the field of fiction and it may safely be said that Lord Dunalley will quickly establish himself as a popular novelist. In A Sporting Education, which is the main story in Saddle and Steel, Mr. Keldon, an American who has " made his bit," thinks it time to give up commerce and learn how to become a sportsman and a gentleman. He places himself under the able tuition of Captain Hugh Darley. Though Keldon finds his newly proposed vocation rather more difficult than " hot air merchandising," he tries to learn with an earnest zest, supported by a disarming urbanity, which makes him as lovable a character as Hugh Darley is. This is a sporting novel without a villain. A kindly good humour pervades it from the first to the last chapter and the whole book will appeal to all readers who like a good, clean sporting story told in a pleasant, light vein.
