A contemporary review states: "In doing this he also presents for us the changing scene of American social life during the years from 1921 to the present. He uses a great deal of space to describe the country club crowd who by this time have become infinitely boring on paper. The cocktail parties, night life, and the witty but superficial conversation would require a cleverer satirist than Mr. Raynolds to make them interesting. However, he redeems himself with two of his characters, Jim, the workingman, and his son, Ralph Parks. Mr. Raynolds by his own admission is a satellite of Thomas Wolfe.
