First Edition. St. John dustjacket art. A surprisingly atypical western novel of a cowpuncher who gets himself involved in Hollywood movie making and the use of cocaine. When he "walked into a movie set and mistook drama for real life and pulled off as thrilling a bit of rescue work as the camera had ever filmed. In fact, it got him a job, doubling for the hero in the 'stunts' that the popular star hadn't the nerve to try. Chad learned a lot that Mother never taught him. He learned about gin parties and 'happy dust' and 'necking'. He couldn't see how a nice girl like the beautiful Beryl Blythe could stand for that stuff. And he found in the end that 'the real thing,' after all, is what gets by in both life and the movies". On pages 248 and 275 the hero confronts his love interest about her use of cocaine and gets into a fight with a movie star strung out on the same drug. Presumed First Edition. Original printed wrappers. Extremely rare early work by this author who would later become known for her mystery novels. Her first published short story, "Thursday and the King and Queen," was published in Women's Home Companion in 1920. This may very well be the her first separately published work. Only five copies listed on WorldCat. In Yonkers, DuBois attended the Halsted School and began writing and saving her compositions when she was thirteen. In 1911, she was diagnosed with tuberculosis and spent several months in a sanatorium. She wrote a great deal of poetry during her illness, but dedicated herself to prose thereafter. She produced several plays with the help of friends. The first of these, The Forty Thieves, was produced for the Halsted School Alumnae Association with good results. After this, Dubois and her friends organized The Workshop Players, one of the first small community theaters for children. Many of the children's plays produced during this period, including The Sleeping Beauty, The King of Caramand and Aladdin were later produced in New York by the Clare Tree Major Theater Company. First Edition in dustjacket with '150th Thousand' plug at front panel. Scarce first printing of Glyn's novel about a married and exotic Balkan queen who seduces a young British aristocrat, allegedly inspired by her affair with 16-years junior Lord Alistair Innes Ker, brother of the Duke of Roxburghe, which scandalized Edwardian society. The fact that the pair make love on a tiger-skin rug was more than enough to shock reading audiences and provoke somewhat of a scandal. The liaison produces a son, though because Henrietta is married, she is able to pass the child off as her husband's. On a more conservative note, she devotes the remainder of her life to her son's success. Still, due to the provocative sex scenes, London critics almost universally condemned Three Weeks, with the result that by 1916 the novel had sold more than two million copies and been translated into a number of languages. Basis for the 1924 Goldwyn Picture starring Aileen Pringle and Conrad Nagel. Also the source for a London stage play in 1908 and a silent film in 1914. Mark Twain read Three Weeks and met with Elinor Glyn who later produced a 1908 pamphlet in which Glyn reported on there meeting and what Twain said about her book which was complimentary. A contemporary 1907 printed dustjacket in an exceptional scarcity for this title, having been produced on rather fragile paper stock. We presume the changes from (if there was a first printing jacket) the first jacket would be the addition of some press quotes at the front panel and the addition of the printing statement at front panel.
