Volumes 2 and 3 bound in one, January to December 1849. Contemporary 3/4 leather binding, marbled boards, gilt lettering at spine. Contains the three earliest contributions by Horatio Alger to a periodical, and his first published works. "Voices of the Past" (Poem), pp. 278 of Vol. II (June 1849); "Chivalry", a 2-page article p. 123 of Volume II, (March 1849) and "Cervantes", a page article p.241 (November, 1849). (See Gardner Bibliography). Also prints an obituary for Edgar Allan Poe who died in that year. Very scarce Alger item. Very Good volume, outer hinges cracked, front free end papers and title page shaken, text generally clean and free of staining.
