Item #14560 The Amateur Gentleman. Jeffery FARNOL.

The Amateur Gentleman. Boston: Little, Brown and Co., 1913.

First American Edition of author's second novel. Herman Pfeifer dustjacket art and illustrations. Hubin listed mystery and Farnol's most lasting contribution to the field of historical adventure and mystery novels concerning a young man who inherits a fortune and who uses that money to instigate a number of adventures and intrigues. Basis for the 1920 silent film directed by Maurice Elvey and starring Langhorn Burton and Madge Stuart as well as another silent version in 1926 directed by Sidney Olcott and starring Richard Barthelmess and Dorothy Dunbar. Most memorable, however, of the film adaptations of The Amateur Gentleman is the 1936 talkie directed by Thornton Freeland and starring Douglas Fairbanks Jr. and Elissa Landi. A classic of its genre and extremely uncommon title to be found in original illustrated dustjacket. Very Good, lettering at spine and cover dulled, noticeable bend or crease at front cover, in Very Good dustjacket, mild drip stains and spots to panels and spine, some darkening to spine, few small edge chips, top spine end with dime sized chip.
