Presumed First American Edition. Octavo, original printed wrappers of light green with dark green lettering. Early novel by prolific writer, agnostic son of a Reverend, whose early works were often scientific included ideas of Darwinism, this novel, originally written in 1885, at the beginning of his novel writing period ranging from 1884 to 1899. Very Good, but for front cover chipped at corners including a 2 inch tall chip to lower front corner, shallow chipping to spine ends, some soiling to wrappers and page ends.
