Item #23803 An Artist Passes. Arndt GIUSTI.

An Artist Passes. New York: Dodd, Mead and Co., 1929.

First Edition. Arthur Hawkins Jr. dustjacket art. Novel about a talented Mexican artist who is "lured from his birthplace in San Cristobal by the recollections of an affair with an American señora, and follows her to San Francisco, where he achieves some success in artistic circles. His 'easily incited passions' get him into trouble, though, so he moves on to Paris and does quite nicely for himself until those pesky passions lead him into criminal ways, whereupon he is forced to flee Paris and return in secret to San Cristobal." The author was a brother of actor Roy D'Arcy, who enjoyed a brief if successful movie career playing villainous foreigners in the 1920s and 1930s; Arndt apparently spent much of his life in Los Angeles, probably in the dwindling (and never very large) shadow of his brother, writing plays that were given local productions but rarely made it out of town; this was his only novel. Near Fine in Very Good dustjacket, some mild fading to colors, few shallow edge chips and closed tears.
