First Edition. Tall octavo, original plum cloth with silver illustrated front cover, silver letters to spine, illustrated throughout in black and white, in very scarce illustrated dustjacket. Humorous and witty writing on the topic of marriage, addressing "things we do not say openly now, though all men and most women realize that such things are handed down from generation by word of mouth" (from inside flap). Attributed to one of the first English professional female literary writers, about whom little is known other than her work as an author and as a spy for the British crown. Near Fine in Very Good dustjacket but for tear to 3/4 length of rear panel mended at verso with tape, inch tears and shallow chipping to spine ends, and rubbing to panel cover.
