Pape illustrations throughout, in original illustrated dustjacket. Fantasy novel and ironic romance set in the imaginary province of Poictesme during the first half of the 13th century. Second volume of the "Biography of the Life of Manuel," a swineherd who elevates to the rank of the Count of Poictesme. Its reception was lukewarm, released amidst a scandal involving the author suspected of murder, but was nevertheless noted for beautiful and poetic moments. Near Fine in Very Good dustjacket, 2 inch diameter dampstain to front panel edge, few shallow chips and tears.
