Presumed Third Edition. Van Dine's first mystery novel and famously scarce Haycraft-Queen cornerstone in which Philo Vance investigates the "sensational" murder of a Wall Street broker. This is the 1928 printing, two year after the extremely rare 1926 First Edition. Flaps advertise "The 'Canary' Murder Case", "Greene Murder Case" and "Benson Murder Case". Basis for the 1930 Paramount Picture talkie directed by Frank Tuttle and starring William Powell and William Boyd. Near Fine, contemporary inscription at front endpaper, in Good dustjacket, modest edge chipping, closed tears at spine edges.
