Item #26273 Alice Devine. Edgar JEPSON.

Alice Devine. Indianapolis: Bobbs-Merrill Co., (1916).

First Edition. Gordon dustjacket art. Listed in Hubin as a marginal mystery. At the death of his uncle, Lord Garthoyle falls heir to Garthoyle Gardens. Since this means a decided addition to his income the young man is ready to congratulate himself but he finds that there are conditions. Garthoyle Gardens, a group of model houses, have been his uncle's pride. He has wished to transfer his interest in them to his nephew and has left them to him on condition that he manage them himself and act as his own house agent. This book is made up of the amusing experiences encountered in the fulfillment of his duty. The first of them is an encounter with a charming young girl who is masquerading as a ghost. It is this girl Alice Devine and the mystery of her masquerade that give unity to a collection of more or less unrelated episodes. Almost Near Fine bright copy in Very Good dustjacket, shallow loss at spine ends, light stain at lower front flap edge.
