The Virgin Kills

The Virgin Kills. New York: Alfred A. Knopf, 1932.

First Edition. J. W. Oliver dustjacket art. "Death went up the river with the Virgin, Eric Vennell's yacht, when that millionaire gambler sailed for the Regatta at Poughkeepsie with his oddly assorted guests. Why then was that ugly bruiser Mick O'Rourke aboard? And what was he doing in a crowd that included Al Connors, the columnist, beautiful Carla Sard from Hollywood, Torry Jones, the transatlantic flier, and other celebrities". Whitfield was an associate of Dashiell Hammett and is well known for his hard boiled mystery novels. A very scarce title. Near Fine but for contemporary bookplate at front endpaper, in nearly Very Good dustjacket, shallow chipping at spine ends and flap corners, some creases and closed tears.
