First Edition. Extremely uncommon novelization of a play by Austin Strong set in the Paris slums and of a woman being forced into prostitution by her oppressive sister. Colorized scene from the theatrical production at front dustjacket panel in which a woman is flagellating another woman on a balcony (and the book is illustrated with stills from the theatrical production). Basis for the 1927 black and white silent 20th Century Fox film directed by Frank Borzage starring Janet Gaynor, Charles Farrell. The film garnered three Academy Awards including best actress, best director and best Screenplay. Fox produced a 1937 talking version directed by Henry King starring Simone Simon, James Stewart, and Jean Hersholt. Near Fine in Very Good dustjacket, nickel sized chip at top front panel, some shallow edge chips and wear, an abrasion at upper rear panel (but there is no text or illustration on rear panel).
