First Edition. Sherwood's indictment of war and fanatical nationalism during a time when the world was on the verge of its second world war. The play predicts the coming conflict with a fictionalized bombing attack on Paris by the Italians. Sherwood himself had served in the Canadian Black Watch of the 42nd Battalion during the First World War and was wounded and gassed in the battle of Arras. He went on to become editor-in-chief of the motion picture column for 'Life' magazine. The original theatre production cast included, Alfred Lunt and Lynn Fontanne. Basis for the 1939 MGM motion picture film with Clark Gable. Near Fine in Very Good plus unfaded dustjacket, with top spine well rubbed, and some wear along top front panel.
