12mo (5 x 7.5”) photo album, with floral cloth over flexible boards, spiral binding. Faux leather pastedown. 13 leaves, with four photo sleeves per leaf. Includes 47 photographs, nearly all of which are color polaroid photographs, with three color 35mm, and one black and white 35mm. This album offers a glimpse into the life of a middle class African American family in the late 1960s. The photos depict moments in the life of a family over the course of a year or few years. Highlights include photos with Santa, getting dressed up to attend a dance, working out, and swimming. Photos depict African-American culture of the late 1960s, including cars, hairstyles, and dress, great for documenting the material culture of ordinary people during a time of great change for African Americans in the United States. Exact dates are scarce, but some of the film is dated December 1967- August 1968. An inscription on the rear pastedown reads “Alphonso”, and it is unclear whether this name belongs to a subject of the photographs. In addition to these domestic photographs, 5 photographs were taken during one family member’s deployment to Vietnam. No other identifying information on book or photographs, except for the name “Alphonso” written on the back pastdown, “Leroy and Ramey REA” written on photo of two US Army soldiers, “Leroy and Mr. Chiak REA”, written on the back of a photo of a soldier and a man in civilian clothes, and “a good buddy of mine (pretty handsome)” on the back of a black and white photo of an African-American man. These photos may have been taken around 1965-6 based on the uniforms, and military vehicles are also pictured. Good condition, light shelf wear, wear to pastedown, two cracks in rear pastedown. Photos mostly in good conditions, with a few creased or torn, and some curling up at the edges, although the image on these is unmarred.
