Travel Notices and Letters of Thomas M. Coleman of the Philadelphia Ledger. 1879.
7.5 x 10” hardcover book, ¾ leather over marbled paper covered boards with paper label. Paper label reads "Thomas M. Coleman Press notices of his first and second departure from Philadelphia for Europe April 23rd 1874 and July 19th 1879. Also published letters written during his stay abroad." Thomas M. Coleman was the longtime city editor of the Philadelphia Ledger, serving for much of the 1850s through 1870s. This scrapbook includes an invitation to a departure party on the steamer “Illinois” signed by Coleman, and clippings of Coleman’s reports from Europe from both of his trips. Also included are two black and white portrait photographs, presumably of Thomas M. Coleman. Newspaper clippings pasted inside indicate that the poet Walt Whitman served as chairman to the departure event attend by other PA officials and dignitaries. At rear is a handwritten letter tipped in signed by the then governor of PA Henry M. (Hoyt. Henry M. Hoyt (1830-1892), Civil War Veteran, Colonel 52nd Pennsylvania Infantry and later Bvt. Brigadier General.) Newspapers clipped come from a variety of papers including the Philadelphia Ledger and Daily Transcript, The Times (Philadelphia), The Philadelphia Bulletin, Philadelphia Record, Daily Pottstown Ledger, Philadelphia Inquirer, Sunday Transcript, Philadelphia Chronicle-Herald, Evening Telegraph, Sunday Republic, The Evening Star, Times and Dispatch (Reading, PA), Pittsburgh Telegraph, The Daily Herald (Morristown, PA), Weekly Courant (Columbia, PA), Daily Times (Bethlehem, PA), Doylestown Democrat, and The Farmville Mercury (Farmville, VA).
